A Brazilian Journalist in Washington DC

My first five days in this great city

After five days living in Washington DC, I finally start to understand how everything works. In the first days, I was a little bit confused – after all, everything was new for me: the people, the weather, the country.

I came from Brazil, a place very different from here. These days, I could perceive that everything works with a machine – since buy pass to the Metro until make copies of a document. Although this, the people seems to be very comprehensive with the foreign population – it’s very common listen a Spanish dialogue here.

On Tuesday, my internship in Voice of America is going to start. Yesterday, I went to the building of VOA to know how to get there – and it seems a great place do work and learn. My activities may include writing news stories, assisting in the production of radio and television programs, updating web pages… Everything related to Journalism, Communication and new Medias. Beyond these, I expect learn how the American press works, their agenda setting and, of course, know this great company that VOA seems to be.

I have to say that I’m a little bit scared, but I’m prepared for all this things. Everything that I studied in Brazil related to Journalism I’m going to see here, but in a practical way. The rush for news, the pursuit for a good a wellspring of information, work under pressure. How my professional life could have a better beginning?
