“This is our new intern”

The phrase of the week

By Yohana de Andrade

On Tuesday, I started in my new internship. Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors, and transmits news in 45 languages. This means: a great place for a journalist.

To work in United States isn’t so different than work in Brazil. Actually, in whole world: you have to be punctual, proactive and have to understand (or try to) how the company works. In my case, I did some translations (Portuguese to English) and transmitted some news to countries that speak Portuguese in Africa. There are five of them: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Today, for example, I read news from Guinea-Bissau. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared February 6 an International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation. Then, I made a research about this theme, and, unfortunately, it’s seems to be a common action in many countries in Africa, Asia and other regions. In Guinea-Bissau, 44, 5% of women population, between 15 and 49 years old, had suffered genital mutilation.

On Monday, it was my first class too. The class was about the press of Washington and how it works, but I had to change. So, next week, my new professor, Peter Stephens, will teach about Trade Based Growth and Regional Models – an exciting theme for me.

This weekend, I and my roommates are going to have lunch together in Chinatown. I also have plans to walk through DC, feel the city, and take a lot of pictures, of course.
