After a month living in United States, I was felling a little bit sad about how many things I can see and visit, and I didn’t. So, I decided make up for lost time.
Friday, Feb/27th, was a busy day. In the morning, I joined Mike Smith, president of The Washington Center, and others students of TWC to meet Frank Carlucci. He was Secretary of Defense under Ronald Regan government, and also ambassador in Portugal. Seventy and nine years old, he could tell us about his experience of working to the government and to private sector.
Two hours after the end of the conversation with Frank Carlucci, the international students could talk with staff of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs for the House of Representatives – a perfect opportunity to ask all questions about the US international politics. In the beginning, I was afraid of asking, but I changed my mind and said: what (if there is one) the Subcommittee is doing to avoid the growing prejudice against Latinos in US; if it are true the rumors that US just went to Iraq to search oil and, last but not least, when the embargo against Cuba is going to finish. The others students also asked questions related to immigration and free trade agreements. But, I have to say, ALL the answers were very politic. The man didn’t say a direct and clear answer – just told us what the US will do, etc.
After that, I went to The Brookings Institution hear what are the priorities for the Italian G8 Summit. Franco Frattini, Italy’s minister of foreign affairs, surprised me. He said the rich countries should share responsibilities and be accountable. And the most important: not forget the problems in Africa just because of the crises. In summary, the priorities are: 1) economic crises; 2) energy and environment; 3) terrorism; 4) Africa development and 5) regional crises (Afghanistan and Pakistan). Everything was very interesting.
On Saturday, I decided drop off on Smithsonian station and make a tour in all museum I could go. So, I spent my day in the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Castle, Hirshhorn Museum and the National Air and Space Museum. Fortunately, I have to say, I got home very tired.
Today, my last day with twenty years old, I had a great experience going to church and see a mass in English. Again, I spent some time in the National Museum of Natural History, but I have to come back – I still have so much to see!
So, after a busy Friday and weekend, I really intend have more days like those.
Nao assisti a maioria dos filmes, mas estava super-hiper mega torcendo pela Penelope Cruz. Ameeeeeei Vicky Cristina Barcelona, e independente das outras atrizes, la chica realmente merecia.

On Saturday, I spent my first Valentine’s Day with my roommates. I tried a real American breakfast, with pancakes, eggs and potatoes; then, we went to the movie theater watch Not That Into You (really good) and, at night, in a party, I met a Portuguese girl – finally someone that speaks the same language that I do, I thought. However, she can’t understand the Brazilian accent, so we just talked in English – much easier, after all.
